About Us:
The inaugural meeting of the Oatlands District Historical Society was held in the Oatlands Court Room on Tuesday 29 October 1996. In May 2003 we were able to purchase our building (formerly a garage) with the assistance of an interest free loan from the Southern Midlands Council.
Our Aim:
Is to showcase and preserve our district's history through the collection of photographs, newspaper items, books, and data relating to local families, properties, buildings as well as various businesses many facets of the area. Our memorabilia covers the period from early convict days to the present.
Services:
Our volunteer local historians offer assistance with historical enquiries and research for a moderate fee. We also have for sale copies of photographs and many local histories and our bi-annual Chronicle. Group tours, morning teas, luncheons and dinners can also be provided.
The District:
Many examples of 19th century architecture, including grand old rural homesteads and many examples of convict built cottages can be seen.
Oatlands:
The district centre, retains the character of a 19th century town, having the largest collection sandstone buildings in a village situation in Australia.
Proclaimed a town in 1821, Oatlands many surviving buildings include the Court House (1829)
